FINAL POST

5) The final post-social-media-collage

Starting out, blogging was like pulling teeth for me. While I have ideas, opinions, and the desire for personal expression, I always channeled them into my art projects, as a Communication Design student and prior. After arecent transfer into the Mass Communication college with a focus in Advertising, I have discovered the great importance of one’s personal brand, in any aspect. That is, the ability to successfully get one’s name and specialty to it’s designated audience or consumer, and in an attractive, appealing manner. It is important to do your best on anything you want to associate with your brand, whether it’s for business or social exposure, especially if it will be published publicly.

I’ve learned a sizable amount about Twitter, associating others in your posts, cross promotion, tags & hashtags for relevant and related subjects, the importance of noticing and acknowledging others’ work when trying to push publicity on your own, and most importantly networking, especially in person. I’ve tried to make an appearance and meet students and officers in a variety of clubs associated with Advertising, including Texas State’s Ad Club– part of the American Advertising Federation, KTSW 89.9 FM- the official radio station of Texas State University, and AMA– American Marketing Associating.

web-browsersI’ve also been introduced the the history, regulations, ethics, and methods of idea sharing of the internet, as well as the fragility of protecting an individual’s work from plagiarism and of protecting one’s privacy.

I’ve learned how read and write basic HTML and CSS coding, which I may or may never use again, who knows? I’ve explored useful and informative social media networks, such as Yelp. The site I found most useful however, is Storify. It acts as a social media portfolio of all the KTSW activity I’ve covered over the last semester, and will
continue to cover in the upcoming summer and fall semesters.

4) YouTube video –MR Fest 2014 Poster FINAL

I will be highlighting MR Fest 2014, which took place last Saturday, April 26th, in venues all over the San Marcos square. This year we had an awesome line up posted on Do512, and a facebook page to keep you in the know.

I have a video of a FOX 7 interview discussing the 7th annual MR Fest… but I figured, who better to tell Jon Zmikly and the FDOM class about MR Fest, than in fact Jon Zmikly himself? The video I am using is of Zmikly interviewing the KTSW Promotions Director, Mairin Heard, about the upcoming 2nd annual MR Fest in 2009.

Although the festival has grown significantly since then, the main idea remains the same, and I think the Studio B interview does a nice job of describing the event.

The following KTSW tweet contains a link to myfoxaustin.com where our current Promotions Director, Dany Recio, talks about MR Fest 2014 on Good Day Austin. Following the interview, MR Fest band Ghostbunny performs their song “Please Don’t Call Me Lover”. [or click here]

1) Happy Marathon Blogging Monday!

Today I’d like my broad landscape of Adventures in Central Texas, and zoom in on a topic that is of much interest to me, the spectrum of local music in our own backyard.

I’m not referring to ACL or SXSW, but simply the bands and musicians who claim their roots in Central Texas, most predominantly the Austin area.

This semester, I have taken up a position at the Texas State University radio station, KTSW 89.9 FM, and I contribute the social media for their program Other Side Drive.

KTSW 89.9 FM the other side of radio

I really enjoy the position because we are consistently scheduling on-air interviews and performances, and I have the opportunity to research and promote our guests on multiple social media faucets, and later meet and photograph their in-studio performances. I’ve learned so much about local music, social media, and radio.

In my next couple blog posts, I’ll dive into the local artists we’ve had the pleasure of hosting, a preview of the studio, and highlight the upcoming My Radio Festival (or MR. Fest) hosted annually by KTSW.
